So I guess all days can't go perfectly. And neither can all nights. And I guess that was the pre-curser to the "not-so-perfect" day. Ben had a pretty good day. Me? Not so much.
Our roommate had a rough night last night. She had full leg casts removed yesterday and last night her muscles were spasming. So she was in pain. So between 11pm and 3am, she was awake and crying A LOT. Ben never even budged, but unfortunately, I didn't get much sleep.
Once morning arrived, I was counting down the minutes until I could drop Ben off in the playroom so I could take a nice shower and have some "me" time. But first, he had OT from 8:30 to 9:30. OT is not my favourite thing. Ben seems to be completely OK with it now, but I personally find it boring. And, to be honest, for some reason, I just don't care about it. I guess I figure that Ben is not going to go his whole life not knowing how to hold a pencil, draw a straight line, or make cookies with play-doh. I'm over-simplifying things, but that's pretty much how I feel.
And then add to that, some comments today about Ben's fine motor skills not being quite age appropriate and it really put me in a bad mood. I don't know why it bothers me so much. I know his GROSS motor skills are not age appropriate and it doesn't bother me at all (well...of course, I want him to walk, but I can talk honestly with his PT's about his strengths and weaknesses and not feel like it's an attack on me). But when we move on to his FINE motor skills, I guess I just feel like I've missed something.
And plus, I'm annoyed. Ben has been followed by OT for years and we go every few months to be told "he's doing fine, come back in 3 months". Eventually, we missed his OT appointment in September and I never bother rescheduling. I mean, why bother? It just seemed like such a waste of time.
Anyways...enough on that.
So...off we go at 9:30 to the playroom. Like I said, I'm all excited for some "me" time before we head to PT at 11. But oops...I forgot. The child life worker was out this morning so parents were required to stay. Crap. So much for a shower. And a 2nd cup of coffee.
So Ben and I played with some bug game and then read like-a-million dinosaur books. This boy is dinosaur obsessed! And he knows it all...and consequently, so do I. I know more than I ever thought I would about T-Rex's, triceratops, stegosaurus, ankylosaurus, and on and on and on. We've even been learning about the 3 dinosaur periods and I even know which dinosaurs lived in which period. It's crazy. Ben's volabulary is AMAZING. We had a big conversation today about why the dinosaurs are extinct. And yes, he even used the word extinct. There's actually a really cool dinosaur book that compares each dinosaur to real life things...which really helped Ben (and me) figure out how big they really are. For example, a T-Rex was as tall as a telephone pole and his teeth were as big as bananas. Cool, eh?
At 11, we were off to PT. Where I learned that Ben wouldn't have Stephanie today, but instead another PT, Gloria. Which was fine. But not as nice. And since I was already cranky, I wasn't thrilled. His session was totally fine and he worked REALLY hard. But it wasn't the same.
The afternoon went better. A child life worker was at the playroom this afternoon as was Philip, Ben's favourite volunteer. So I finally got my "me" time which I celebrated by falling asleep on Ben's bed for an hour, before rushing off for a quick shower. And then 3pm brought pool time.
Ben was TIRED tonight. Really tired. And even cranky. Which he probably caught from me. For some reaons, this boy is OBSESSED with having a bath every night here. At home, he has a bath twice a week. But here? All he wants to do is have a bath. The issue is there is only one bath tub...for about 15 kids. And the bath tub needs to be cleaned in between each kid. Needless to say, the bath tub is a pretty popular place every evening. Ben had a pretty big meltdown when I told him that he couldn't have a bath tonight. He had one last night and I just wasn't going to fight for my place in line tonight.
So now, he's in his jammies. Watching Kipper. I'm on my cot. Tired. Even with the nap from this afternoon. And a bit annoyed that our roommates seem to spend every minute each evening on the phone. WIth about a dozen different people (yes, I'm exaggerating.)
Regardless, of my "not-so-perfect" day, Ben actually had a pretty good one. Except for the bath tub meltdown. So I shouldn't complain. But I'm really hoping for a good night's sleep tonight.
Sorry, but there are no pictures tonight. I didn't manage to really get anything good today. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better picture day.
Goodnight all.

Shriner's - Day 9 (cross-post)
Sorry for the lack of a post last night (or this morning when you had your coffee, Mom), but I was so tired last night, I could hardly think, let alone write.
Yesterday wasn't a bad day. But I didn't get near enough sleep the night before (partly my fault for staying up til after midnight reading and partly Ben's fault for waking up about 8 times between midnight and 3am as well as being up for the day at 6am). So combine a rough night with the physicality that is required to deal with Ben and that makes for one tired Mommy.
So I thought I'd talk about what a day looks like for us....paying particular attention to how many times I have to transfer Ben. Because that seems to be what's taking it's toll on me the most. You see, Ben had major surgery on his spine. That means for the next 6 months we have to make sure that there is no undue strain on his back. It means that all active movement is OK...meaning movements that Ben does on his own are OK (that's why we have pain...he'll know when he's gone too far), but passive movement (like us moving Ben) has all sorts of restrictions on it. In particular, I cannot pick Ben up under the armpits (how we all pick our kids up). And I need to make sure that his legs are never bent so that his trunk and legs are at less than a 90 degree angle. And at this point, it means no floor sitting. The only sitting allowed is in his wheelchair or on a bench.
Here's a video of Stephanie moving Ben from the wheelchair to the mat. This is how I transfer Ben many, many times each day.
SO here is how our day went yesterday:
6am - Ben is awake. I can't believe it. I was so hoping for at least 7:30. After listing to him giggle and laugh in his bed for 20 minutes, I finally get up and put my ipad in front of him so he can watch cartoons on netflix for a little while.
7am - we are both up for the day. I transfer him (#1) from his bed to the wheelchair. Up to this point, he's been eating all his meals from the bed but it's time for him to start eating sitting up.
7:30am - breakfast arrives for him. I head to the cafeteria to get myself something.
8am - Ben needs to pee. Transfer him to the bed (#2) to get his pants off. Transfer to the nifty potty/wheelchair thing we have (#3). Then back to the bed once he's done (#4).
8:30 - Time for a bike ride. Transfer him from the bed to the to the bike (#5).
9am - End the bike ride in the playroom. I go back to our room to get his standing frame. Transfer him from the bike to the stander (#6). I head back to the room to get a shower.
9:45 - Return to the playroom with Ben's wheelchair. Transfer him from the stander to the wheelchair (#7). I return to our room to catch up on emails, etc.
11am - return to the playroom to take him to PT. Find out he has to pee. Return to the room. Transfer from wheelchair to bed (#8) From bed to potty (#9) From potty back to bed (#10) and from bed back to chair (#11). Go to PT and stay with him at PT from 11 til noon. Here's a video from our morning PT session.
Noon - Return to the room for lunch. After lunch, decide it is FINALLY time for Ben to have a bath. Transfer from chair to bed (#12) so I can undress him. Then from bed to (#13) bathtub. They have a little bathseat for him to go in. It looks just like a reclined beach chair.
1pm - transfer from bathtub to bed (#14). Then from bed to wheelchair (#15).
1:30 - Take Ben to the playroom to play with his favourite volunteer, Philip. Return to room for a little nap.
2:45 - Pick Ben up from playroom. And head to PT. After being there for 5 minutes, he then informs me that he needs to pee. So back to the room we go. Transfer to bed (#16), to potty (#17), to bed (#18) and back to wheelchair (#19).
3pm - Back at PT. Transfer from chair to PT bed (#20) to change him into his bathing suit (or babing suit, as he says). Transfer him to the pool (#21). Hang out and watch his pool session.
3:45 - Transfer from pool to PT bed (#22) and then to floor mat (#23) for stretching. Stretching is so great right after he's been in the pool as his muscles are all warmed up. Thankfully, Stephanie transfers him back to his chair after the stretching.
4pm - Return to room. He's tuckered out. So transfer to bed (#23).
4:30pm - Supper arrives. Help him eat his supper. Go to the cafeteria for my supper.
5:30pm - Ben decides he wants to go for another bike ride. So transfer from bed to bike (#24). Go for a little bike ride around the hospital.
5:45 - Return to room as Ben has to pee. Transfer from bike to bed (#25), to potty (#26), and back to bed (#27). Where Ben is happy to hang out til bedtime watching Backyardigans' videos. Thankfully...because by now, my back is telling me that it will take no more. And I am EXHAUSTED.
7pm - Ben goes to sleep. And I crash with my book.

Parenting surprises
As I listen to Ben cry from his bed tonight (we're having sleep problems again....so I'm trying to let him cry himself to sleep), I am reminded of all that I didn't realize about parenthood and raising kids.
I really did not realize that parents of two-year-olds still struggle with sleep issues. I thought that once your baby learned to sleep through the night, then that was it. The sleep issue was over and done with. But alas...that is not so.
Ben was my champion sleeper way back when. And most of the time, he is still a good sleeper. But we sometimes struggle too. And this is one of those times. He has gotten used to us going in to him whenever he cries out. And that has caused the problem to grow. So tonight I fight the urge to go in. Even as he cries out "Mommyyyyyyy, Mommyyyyyy". It's so hard. But necessary.
What has surprised you about parentood?

Dear Pregnant Self...

This week's Question of the Week over at Multiples...and More is: If you could go back in time (think: Marty McFly) and have a chat with your pregnant self, what would you say?
I just love this question...so here goes:
Dear Pregnant Self;
So, you're pregnant. With twins. Are you done freaking out yet? No? Well, don't worry. It'll soon sink in that you really are pregnant with twins and you can get on with the business of getting ready for their arrival. You want some advice from a mom who's "been there, done that"? Yeah? OK, here goes:
In a few weeks you're going to find out that you're having 2 boys. Yes, you heard me. 2 boys. No, not the 2 girls you think you want. 2 boys. And you know what...it's amazing raising boys. You just wait. Once you have them, you will pretty much totally forget that you ever THOUGHT you wanted girls. Really. I promise. So get started on those boys names.
Has the insomnia started yet? No? Well, it soon will. And once those boys arrive, you won't be getting much sleep either. So go to http://www.amazon.com/ right now and buy "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" right now. When it arrives, read it cover to cover. BEFORE the babies arrive. You hear me...BEFORE. You will not have time after they arrive. And if you did manage to find the time, you'll need to nap, not read.
Take belly pictures. Weekly. Start now. I really regret having so few pregnant photos.
Enjoy this time. These are the last few months of being "just the 2 of you". Enjoy it. Take a trip. I really wish we had taken one last vacation "just the 2 of us".
Know that no matter what happens, it's all going to be OK. It's going to be a bit of a rough ride. But you're going to get through it. You will get to the other side. Believe me. You will make it.
Love,
Me

Schedules

The Question of the Week over at Multiples...and More is "Are you a strict scheduler?"
Yep. Absolutely. No question about it. I think when you have 2 or more children you have to be...or chaos will reign supreme in your household. It keeps all of us sane and allows Ben and Daniel to understand the day and what's going to happen next. Here are some more detailed questions they posed:
How old are your kids now? Have you always followed a rigid schedule?
Ben and Daniel are 28 months old. And no, we haven't always followed a rigid schedule. Since they arrived 10 weeks early, they spent the first 8 weeks of their lives in the NICU. So when we brought them home, they were on a pretty strict 3-hour feeding schedule. For the first month or so, we didn't really follow any schedule but always woke the other baby if a baby woke up to eat. There wasn't any real schedule but they were on the same one.
As time went on, we realized that we were ALWAYS waking Ben. Especially at night and this just didn't seem fair. So at that point, we went off a schedule completely. Each baby was able to determine their own schedule. And this worked fine til they were about 6 months adjusted age.
At this point, we worked and worked on a schedule and after a few weeks finally found one. They were ready for it and so were we. We've been on a strict schedule ever since.
Do you think that your schedule is conducive to healthy sleep patterns in your kids?
It is now. But I truly believe that a strict schedule when they're newborns is not. That's why we had to let Ben sleep and not wake him just because his brother was awake.
We now have great sleepers (and have for a long time now).
Do people give you a lot of flack for being a strict scheduler? How do you respond?
Oh yes. Especially parents to just 1 baby. They really don't get it. I just reply that because we have 2, we have to be more scheduled so that we can all get through the day with our sanity in tact. Luckily, most of my mommy friends have twins so they get it.
Has your routine become more relaxed as your kids have gotten older?
It's probably a bit more relaxed now that they have just 1 nap. When they were on 2 naps, we had to be pretty strict. But I'd say we're still pretty strict.
How do you kids react when they are completely off their schedules- and how do you get them back on track?
My kids are RARELY off their schedules. There was one day before Christmas when we were at my Mom's and I thought they could handle not having a nap. Boy was I wrong. Daniel was OK but Ben had a complete meltdown. We basically had to put him in the car so he could sleep and take him home.
What's our schedule like?
6am - 6:30am - we start to hear noises from their room
7am - Daddy gets them up. They hang out with Daddy and have their milk.
7:30am - Breakfast with Mommy
9am - noon - Usually an outing somewhere - not necessarily for 3 hours but if we're doing something that day, this is when we do it.
Noon - Lunch
12:45 - Naptime
3:15pm - Wake from nap. Have milk and a snack
5:15pm - Supper
5:45pm - Into jammies
6:15pm - Bedtime!

An admission...and some questions...
OK. I’m going to be honest. I’m having a bit of a hard time over here. I have 2 two-year olds (one with CP) and life is hard…and exhausting. I admit it. I’m struggling. So, instead of just feeling sorry for myself, I’m reaching out for help. From you. I have some questions and I’m hoping you can give me some answers or suggestions on how to make life easier.
Is anyone else’s CP kid having a hard time with sleep? I read a post here about E’s sleeping problems and it got me thinking about Ben. He used to be a champion sleeper…but now, not so much. He still sleeps through the night most nights of the week, but there are usually one or two where he wakes in the middle of the night crying. Sometimes a quick visit from Mommy or Daddy will comfort him but usually it doesn’t and he’ll cry on and off for a few hours. I think he’s uncomfortable and since he can easily reposition himself, he has trouble going back to sleep. But I’m not sure. Anyone out there with any similar experiences / stories?
Anyone else out there completely physically exhausted? I’m just looking for some company on this one…you know…the whole “misery loves company” thing. Ben is getting so heavy…he’s about 27 lbs now. And he’s so hard to hold…he doesn’t “hold on” the way a typically-developing child does. And he constantly wants us to walk him around holding onto his hands (instead of using his walker or crawling) and it’s just so hard on my body. That, combined with the lack of sleep mentioned above, has got me completely worn out.
What does the future hold? I know that no one can really answer this question. But I’m having a bit of a hard time (see 1 and 2 above) and need a bit of hope to hold on to right now. Ben is 27 months old. He’s been diagnosed with spastic diplegia. He can use his walker (just started this). He crawls on all fours, can get in and out of w-sit, and can pull to stand and cruise (with someone spotting due to balance issues). He’s classified as a Level 2 on the Gross Motor Function Classification System. Anyone out there with an older child that had a similar diagnosis / similar skills at this age that can shed any light on what the future may hold for him?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make life easier? Anyone come across a great idea or product that is impacting your child or your quality of life? I just know that you other moms out there have great ideas or have come across some great products that are making your lives easier. Please share them with me! I’m having a hard time right now and need all the help I can get. In particular, what are you using to transport your child (besides a stroller)? Maybe you’ve come across something that has been a great motivational tool for your child?
That’s all I can think of for now. I’m sure there are a thousand more questions out there but for now, this is enough.

Counting sheep
As I lay awake in the middle of the night last night (thanks to Ben who cried off an on from 2am til about 4am), I came up with some alternatives to counting sheep such as:
1. Listing the many words the boys have now. Result: Somewhere around 150.
2. Listing all 32 NFL teams in alphabetical order. Result: Successful - Yes, we're a little big football-obsessed around here these days.
3. Listing all USA states in alphabetical order. Result: Successful
As I eventually headed toward sleep, I came up with a more interesting list though. Here are my top ten "Get up and Dance" songs (i.e. when I'm out somewhere and these songs are played, I cannot stay in my seat).
1. Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
2. Enter Sandman - Metallica
3. I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) - The Pretenders
4. Billie Jean - MJ
5. Thunderstruck - AC/DC
6. Papa Don't Preach - Madonna
7. Sweet Child o' Mine - Guns 'N Roses
8. Faith - George Michael
9. Pour Some Sugar on Me - Def Leppard
10. Jack & Diane - John Cougar Mellancamp
I'm sure I've missed some great ones but these are what I came up with at 4am. What about you - what are your "Get up and Dance" songs?
As I look over the list, I realize that I have really dated myself. Ah well...Gotta love the 80's!
Now, let's hope for more sleep from Ben tonight.

Sleep and Mother's Day
My husband and I are away for the weekend. We left yesterday morning, drove for 3 hours and found ourselves in a completely different city for the next 2 days. And what have we done with ourselves? Well, we've mostly slept. Thank God the hotel bed is absolutely amazing. I'm seriously considering stealing the sheets...they are THAT amazing.
What else have we done besides sleep? Well, eat (alot), drink (alot), shop (some) and talk about the kids (alot). It always surprises me how much I miss the kids when I'm away from them. I wish it was possible to get a break but at the same time see them for about an hour each day.
I called home this evening to see what they've been up to. Sounds like they've been having a great time. Our nanny is watching them while we're away (which is so perfect since I don't have to worry one bit). Today they went to her sister's (she has 2 girls, aged almost 5 and almost 2). The older girl and Ben had races down their hallway on their tummies (since that's how Ben crawls)...seriously, how cute is that? It makes me teary just thinking about how much fun Ben would have had doing that. I wished (just a tiny bit) that I had been there to see it.
It looks like my Mother's Day will be pretty great. I'll start it off by sleeping late (perfect), going out for brunch (again perfect) and a nice drive home with my hubby to see my kids (another perfect). I remember last year. I was pretty disappointed by my first Mother's Day (I remember sneaking upstairs to have a private cry at one point). My husband bought me a very nice pair of earrings. Yes, they were very nice. But all I wanted was to sleep late and get a break. I was just so exhausted and all I wanted to sleep. But...that was last year...and this year I seem to have gotten the perfect Mother's Day. I'll let you know how it goes.
